'Art' and About

Hello Dolphin Community,

This week I was able to make my way over to the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth to view an exhibit they have on display. The exhibit is called "D-Y Pathways K-12: Art Journey" and it features artwork by students from all across the D-Y school district. There are wonderful representations of our art students work in both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional art work on display at the Cultural Center from now through May 30th. This is another demonstration of our Core Value of Excellence, specifically one of the defining characteristics of this value that states, "We provide students access to quality education with opportunities to explore and excel in a variety of subject matter and extracurricular activities that develop knowledge and skills that align with each student's interests."

I wanted to provide a quick update on the budget. The override did get support at Town meetings in both towns over the last couple of weeks. The override is a two-step process in both towns, after town meeting there will be a ballot question that will need to be voted on and those votes will occur Dennis - Tuesday, May 12 and Yarmouth - Tuesday, May 19. If you would like to read more about the budget from a previous message I posted, View that message on the budget here.

Finally, as we head into May we begin another time for assessments. This includes state level assessments with many students participating in our state MCAS testing during this month as well as AP exams occurring at the high school. Families can be supportive of this process by ensuring they are checking in to make sure they are aware of the dates for these assessments (check school calendars). You can also support your student by making sure they get a good night's sleep ahead of the exams.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Marc J. Smith, Ed.D.

Some Additional Stuff:

Need a Bus Stop Next Year?

Dear Dolphin Families,
The district has a new transportation request process for the 2026–2027 school year. Families must fill out a transportation form for each student to let us know if bus service is needed for next school year.
To make sure transportation is ready for the first day of school in September, forms must be turned in by June 25.

Forms turned in after June 25 may not be processed before school starts. Returning students who do not submit a form by the deadline will not automatically receive bus transportation. Families will need to submit a late request, which could cause a delay in service.

If you have any questions or need any assistance please reach out to your child's school.
Thank you for your attention to this important deadline.

Superintendent Listening Session

On April 15, I held my second listening session of the school year. The listening session in-person at the D-Y Library. Just like the last session, the topic of the conversation was, "Why D-Y? What are the opportunities students have as the progress through D-Y and how can we improve?" If you were unable to attend you can watch the listening session here.

If you would like to see the virtual listening session on the same topic, but with different participants from March, you can watch the listening session here.

Budget Information Video

If you are looking for a brief (20 min) overview of the school district budget you can view a presentation on the budget here.
This presentation was designed to provide information on:
  • an overview of the budget,
  • the major costs affect the budget,
  • the monies come into the budget to offset costs
  • how the assessments are calculated for the two towns
  • how D-Y compares to other school district's in regards to spending
  • the impacts of a failed override
