DYRSD Emergency/Weather Closing Procedure
Dear Dolphin Community,
Weather conditions across the state and Cape can differ significantly and may change with little notice. At times, severe or unsafe weather may require schools to dismiss early, close for the day, or open later than usual, depending on circumstances.
These determinations are made thoughtfully and collaboratively, not independently. Decisions are based on a variety of factors and informed by input from multiple sources. When storms are predicted, we review reports on roadway conditions from public works and public safety officials within our Dennis and Yarmouth communities, along with guidance from additional reliable sources.
Whenever feasible, if a decision can be reached the evening before a major weather event, we will communicate it at that time. If not, announcements will be made as early as possible in the morning, and no later than 6:00 a.m.
In the event of severe weather resulting in a school closure or delayed opening, families will be notified through ParentSquare. An urgent alert will be sent via email and text message, so it is important that the school has your most up-to-date phone number on file. If your contact information changes, please notify your child’s school as soon as possible. Information will also be posted on the District website and the District’s official Facebook page. You may also find information on local news and radio stations.
On days when schools are closed, all school-related activities are canceled.
If there is a delayed opening, all schools and bus routes will start two hours later than their normal schedules. Students should arrive at their designated bus stops two hours after their usual pickup time. Dismissal will occur at the regular time. Morning preschool sessions will be canceled, while afternoon preschool will operate as scheduled.
Although uncommon, early dismissals may be necessary if a storm develops suddenly or worsens during the school day. In these situations, every effort will be made to reduce the possibility of students returning to unattended or locked homes.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in keeping our school community safe.
