Hello Dolphin Community,
This has been a very difficult week for D-Y. Many of our families have loved ones directly impacted by the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Melissa. Other families have been negatively impacted by the shut down of the federal government and either furloughed or lost access to important support benefits for food. Additionally our community was devastated by the sudden passing of Gabriel Siqueira, a senior at DYHS this past weekend. However, it is in its most difficult times, that a community shows its true resolve, its true character, and its collective strength. Over this past week, I have had the privilege to bear witness to D-Y's strength in the face of adversity. Whether it was the way the high school community has come together to support the Siqueira family, Gabriel's friends, and one another in this time of grief, or the way that our community has stepped up to support those less fortunate (see below), the sense of pride I have felt this last week has been unmatched in my professional career.
As I mentioned above, Jamaica was recently severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Many in our D-Y community are deeply concerned for their loved ones back home, and we want to help. We’re collecting non-parishable donations to fill barrels that will be shipped to trusted organizations providing relief in the most affected areas. Donation boxes will be located at each school from Wednesday November 12 - Friday November 21. Any contribution is greatly appreciated.
Most needed items:
- Toiletries & essentials: toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, diapers, wipes, candles, flashlights, bug spray, tarps, rope.
- Canned goods: mackerel, sardines, baked beans, red kidney beans, condensed milk, corned beef, tuna, sausages.
- Dry goods: instant oatmeal, mac & cheese, peanut butter, sugar, white rice, cup soup, ramen.
Your generosity will bring comfort and hope to those facing great hardship. Thank you for supporting our Jamaican community during this difficult time.
Thank you for your ongoing support and enjoy the weekend,
Marc J. Smith, Ed. D.
