Math Resources
Preparing All Students to be College and Career Ready in Mathematics
The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District has implemented high quality math resources in grades K-12 that are focused, connected and rigorous.
In grades K-5, the Eureka Math Squared resources highlight the expectations that are being placed on our students today. It is imperative that we lay a strong foundation for mathematics in later grades. As a story, Eureka Math Squared builds students’ knowledge logically and thoroughly to help them achieve deep understanding. While this approach is unfamiliar to those of us who grew up memorizing mathematical facts and formulas, it has been tested and proven to be the most successful method in the world.
What Eureka Math Squared is not
- Not endless exercises without context
- Not isolated memorization
- Not working alone
-
Not relying on a calculator
Grades K-5
In grades K-3 and grades 4-5, the Eureka Math Squared resources highlight the expectations that are being placed on our students today.
What Eureka Math Squared is:
- Using real-world problems
- Understanding why
- Explaining your reasoning
- Doing math in your head

Grades 6-8
In grades 6-8, Illustrative Mathematics is a problem-based curriculum. The scope and sequence of units, activities, and representations are designed to help students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, build fluency with procedures, and solve mathematical problems that reflect their lived experiences. Our global environment has many challenges and problems that need to be solved. We are preparing our students for their future as critical thinkers and problem-solvers.
What is a problem-based curriculum?
In a problem-based curriculum, students spend most of their time in class working on carefully crafted and sequenced problems. Teachers help students understand the problems, ask questions to push their thinking, and orchestrate discussions to be sure that the mathematical takeaways are clear. Learners gain a rich and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures and experience applying this knowledge to new situations. Students frequently collaborate with their classmates—they talk about math, listen to each other’s ideas, justify their thinking, and critique the reasoning of others. They gain experience communicating their ideas both verbally and in writing, developing skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
Grades 9-12
The high school mathematics program of studies follows the recommended curriculum for college and career readiness as outlined by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The mathematics program uses the high quality math resource, Carnegie Math and follows the Integrated Pathway Model Courses for grades 9-12, Integrated Algebra I, Integrated Geometry, and Integrated Algebra II & Trigonometry. These three courses provide a solid mathematical foundation for all students. Additional math courses are offered to extend the students’ mathematical growth to prepare them for success in college, opportunity in the workplace, and effective participation in civic life.
Courses in the mathematics program focus on developing students in the following areas:
- Conceptual understanding – make sense of the math, reason about and understand math concepts and ideas
- Procedural fluency – know mathematical facts, compute and do the math
- Capacity – solve a wide range of problems in various contexts by reasoning, thinking, and applying the mathematics they have learned
