Since the Lower Field was turned over, the contractor has continued to progress work on the Upper Field. The base material and the shock pad were installed to allow the turf installation to begin. The rain events in October had slowed the progress slightly but the turf is anticipated to be completed the end of October. The contractor will then install the infill material and final testing will be performed. Following the turf, the contractor can final grade the base material for the track to allow paving to happen. After the paving, the contractor will finish the fencing and perform any punch list work.

The DYIMS turf field project has seen significant progress with the Lower Field being completed and turned over to the District for use on 9/12/25.
This is a milestone for the project as the District now has a new synthetic turf field available for the school and community to utilize. RAD sports is continuing to work on the upper field and is currently hauling out the existing base stone and important new base stone, all in preparation for the turf carpet to be installed. The project team will continue to perform QA/QC testing to ensure the material installed beneath the carpet meets the design requirements. New fencing will be installed, and the track will be paved after the turf carpet is installed on the upper field.

The DYIMS turf field replacement project is well underway. The Contractor, R.A.D. Sports, has removed, in its entirety, the existing turf system from the lower field, installed flat drains, new base material and the finish stone layer. The turf carpet itself will be installed during the week of (8/25-8/29). R.A.D. Sports is currently in the process of removing the upper field material prior to installing the new system. The project schedule has slowed to allow for extensive QA/QC testing to be performed ensuring the material installed beneath the carpet meets the design requirements. The schedule at this time has the Contractor completing and turning over the lower field prior to the start of school to enable the districts use while the upper field be completed and turned over in September.

Progress on the DYIMS turf field replacement remains steady. The Contractor R.A.D. Sports has completely removed the existing turf system from the lower field and has installed the flat drains and new base material. The finish stone layer will be installed just before the shock pad, carpet and infill. R.A.D. Sports has removed the existing track surface on the upper field and will begin the excavation/removal of the existing base material and import of new material shortly.

The DYIMS turf field replacement project is progressing smoothly and on schedule. The Contractor R.A.D. Sports has completed the removal of the turf, infill, shock pad, and flat drains on the lower field, and is actively excavating the base material. The upper field is close behind, with preparations underway to mill the surrounding walking track for its upcoming replacement. Next week, R.A.D. Sports will begin installing the flat drains and new base material on the lower field. Once these are in place, the installation of the turf system will commence.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
South Yarmouth, MA - March 21, 2025 - Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District.
The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District is taking immediate steps to address construction defects in the turf fields installed as part of the new D-Y Intermediate Middle School project. The two athletic fields, which have been problematic since their installation, have been experiencing significant drainage issues, leading to several concerns such as erosion of the playing surface, damage to the surrounding track, and bubbling of the field. You can read more about it in a previously shared Superintendent newsletter.
These issues do not meet the expectations of the school district or the taxpayers, and we are committed to resolving them. After a thorough review and assessment over the past year, we have identified that the root cause of these problems lies in the original design. As a result, the district has decided to move forward with a new design, which will involve reconstructing the fields to ensure proper drainage and durability. The district would also like the community to know that we are actively seeking restitution for the defects associated with the original installation.
At the March 17, 2025 DYRSD School Committee meeting, a recommendation was made to award the contract to R.A.D. Sports. Not only did R.A.D. Sports submit a competitive bid, meeting all the qualifications, they come with a long history of work in installation of turf and excellent references. Construction is scheduled to begin on May 15, 2025, with substantial completion expected by August 1, 2025. Final completion of the project is slated for August 15, 2025.
To facilitate the work, construction vehicles will be accessing the site through a side road near the Math wing of the high school, utilizing an access road near the maintenance building and the back athletic fields. While this may cause some temporary disruption, every effort has been made in the planning process to minimize any impact on traffic, academic activities, and athletic events.
“We understand the critical role these fields play in both our athletic programs and community events,” said Marc Smith, Superintendent of schools. “We are committed to ensuring that the fields are properly remediated and ready for use by our students and the community as soon as possible.”
The district will continue to provide updates on the timeline and construction progress as more details become available. We appreciate the patience and support of the community as we work to improve the athletic facilities for everyone.
