Family Report Card Memo

Dear Families,
We are excited to share with you our updated standards-based report cards for the 2022-2023
academic year. While the report card has always reflected the standards set forth by the
Massachusetts Department of Education (MA DESE Frameworks), the new report card is a
more concise picture of your students’ learning journey. The Massachusetts Curriculum
Frameworks provide teachers, students, and families with clear and shared expectations for
what all students should know and be able to do by the end of each school year. They represent
a promise of an equitable education for all students. Student learning experiences have always
been connected to the curriculum frameworks and the updated report card will provide a clearer
description of that learning.

Here is a visual to illustrate the difference between the two report cards:

In addition to the updated content reporting, the new report card also provides families with a
more detailed description of their social emotional learning. A child’s ability to regulate their
emotions and behavior, make responsible decisions, and form positive relationships with their
peers and adults are key factors in supporting their ability to learn. Providing students with a
safe and structured learning environment with clear expectations and positive reinforcement
contributes to their social emotional development. With this updated Social and Emotional
Competencies section of the report card, there will no longer be “EFFORT”
grades.

Students will receive an indicator rating in each academic and social-emotional competency to
clearly illustrate strengths and areas for growth. The rating scale will be the following:

A sample report card for each grade can be found on the district website under the Office of
Instruction tab. Parents and caregivers can also expect to see the new version during Parent
Conferences on October 18 and 20, 2022. Teachers will utilize it as a tool to walk families
through the progress their student has made so far and what continued learning will look like.
