School Wide Education Service Plan

The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District (DYRSD) acknowledges the student discipline policies, rules, and regulations must be written and established in all schools within the school system. The overarching goal(s) of student discipline is to provide a learning environment that protects the welfare of all students. The discipline provided by the DYRSD is in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws and establishes a school environment that is free of discrimination and provides equal access to all education programming and extracurricular activities.

Implementation of the general rules of conduct is the responsibility of the Principal and the professional staff within the school building. The Principal is to ensure that student discipline and the code of conduct are consistent with Massachusetts General Laws and not in conflict with the School Committee policy. Building discipline should be an extension of the District policies by being more specific as they relate to the individual schools.

The purpose of disciplinary action is to restore acceptable behavior. When disciplinary action is necessary, it shall be administered with fairness and shall relate to the individual needs and the individual circumstances. The building Principal believes that removal from the education setting at any time is a last resort to restore acceptable behavior. As a result, when any student is suspended or expelled for more than ten consecutive days, the school district will offer/provide educational services that allow for academic progress during the period of removal.

Educational services may include, but are not limited to:

  • Alternative schooling services
  • Private schooling services
  • Web-based academic services
  • Tutoring services
  • Homebound schooling services

It is the responsibility of the building Principal to notify and identify in collaboration with the parents/guardians the educational services necessary for the student to continue making academic progress as compared with all students. Once an educational service plan is established and implemented for a student, it is also the responsibility of the building Principal to verify student enrollment and participation. The DYRSD believes that whenever possible, a student should be educated in their community based public school and only utilize educational service plan when a student is unable to participate in general programming due to discipline matters.

The DYRSD is committed to ensuring that all of its programs and facilities are accessible to all members of the public. We do not discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, national origin, race, religion, gender, gender identity, homeless status, or sexual orientation.
