A Letter to Our Families:
Dear MES Families,
What an absolute delight it has been to welcome back the author, Ana Crespo, to our school! Ana joined us for a four day workshop in our kindergarten through third grade classrooms focused on creating our very own picture books! Students took part in developing, writing, revising, editing, and sharing their books while being guided and inspired by a professionally published author! Thank you, Ana, for being such a huge part of the MES extended school community! Check out more highlights below!
On April 3rd and 4th, our third graders will be taking the first portion of MCAS. These state assessments are electronic and focus on the areas of math and English language arts (ELA) for our third graders. Next week, third graders will be taking the ELA portion of the MCAS. It is very important that students arrive on time to school. We greatly appreciate your support!
Warm regards,
Ms. Mahedy & Mrs. Carlson
Author Visit
This week, author Ana Crespo visited each classroom three times, guiding students in their writing projects. Ana shared examples from her own picture books, including her new picture book that is coming out in June: Saudade: Our Longing for Brazil. Ana also shared a picture book she loves as a great example of a fun story: I Don't Like Koala by Sean Ferrell. Our students from K-3 loved this story and many children wanted to know where they can get a copy of this book! Ana showed our students that writers get their ideas from all sorts of places, and that writers are constantly revising and polishing their stories. Thank you, Ana, and thank you to the Mass Cultural Council for the grant funding for Ana's four-day visit!
Book Donation to Third Grade
The MLK Education Task Force organized a community book drive to provide our third grade classrooms with books featuring children and families of color. Local bookstores enthusiastically embraced the effort! Just over 400 books have been donated to our district's third grade classroom libraries! Each of our third grade teachers will be receiving between 32-34 new books! There is great diversity in book subjects by race and ethnicity, cultures, gender and reading level. What a treasure to share with our students for years to come!
Calmer Choice
Here is the next set of Calmer Choice videos created by our students in Mrs. Martin's first grade class! These videos share some of the strategies that our students have been learning about while practicing mindfulness. Click on a link below and check how our students apply these strategies to their own experiences!
