Weekly MESsages: March 1, 2024
A Message to Our Families:
Dear MES Families,
It was wonderful to return to school to celebrate the great experiences that were shared prior to February vacation and we look forward to many more coming our way!
This week we have begun our Scholastic Book Fair with the opportunity for students and staff to preview the items that will be for sale during the week of March 4th. Our first graders have shared a visit from Mass Audubon and our third graders shared discoveries during STEM activities. We welcome Ella Terrio back MES! She is a current DY High School student sharing in a work-based learning program. There are more details below regarding these events and more!
MES would like to thank Kirk Sandone and Citizens Bank for the generous donation of water bottles to our school! Your support is greatly appreciated!
We look forward to sharing our parent-teacher conferences with our families on March 5th and 7th! Whether families choose to share a conference via Zoom or in-person, this is a wonderful opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, celebrate your child’s strengths, and plan for your child’s needs. We hope to “see” you around the school!
Warm regards,
Ms. Mahedy and Mrs. Carlson
Scholastic Book Fair!
The Scholastic Book Fair is running from Monday, March 4th, until Friday, March 8th! Students and staff were invited to preview the book fair this week and will be able to purchase books during the time slot that classrooms have signed up for during the week of March 4th. Classroom teachers will notify families of their day to visit the book fair. We are truly looking forward to it!
Mass Audubon visits Grade 1
Our first graders shared a visit from Mass Audubon on Friday, March 1st, focused on amphibians. Students were able to learn about some of the 21 species of amphibians that live in Massachusetts, find out about their characteristics, and discover how these species survive our cold New England winters. Mass Audubon "programs are designed to enhance students’ understanding of species and habitats; ecological concepts such as food webs, cycles, systems, adaptation, and evolution; climate change; and interrelationships between people and nature!" Check out more details on their website: https://www.massaudubon.org/programs-events/schools-teachers/programs-for-schools
STEM Activities in Grade 3: Design a Sail Challenge!
Our third graders planned, built, and tested sails with Mr. Spano, our STEM instructional coach, Mrs. Cronin, our literacy coach. Ms. Duggan and Mrs .Filosa-Wills have provided the following highlights to share with you from this opportunity! Students completed science writing and engaged in hands-on exploration! What a perfect way to integrate literacy and science!
Meet Ella!
MES would like to welcome Ella Terrio back to her elementary school! We are so grateful that you are here!
Hi everyone! My name is Ella Terrio and I am a senior at DY High School. I am also a former Marguerite E. Small student! I am recently committed to the University of Tampa, and will be majoring in psychology. I am a part of a work-based learning program at my school that allows me to work at M. E. Small with grades K-3. I am passionate about working with kids one day, and I am so excited to work with all the students! Thank you!
Lost & Found
Our Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets, hats, gloves, and more! Please ask your child to check the lost and found if they are missing anything. Families may also stop by the main office to triple check our lost and found, too! These items will be available for families to look through during next week's Parent-Teacher Conferences. Please label any items with your child's name, so that we can help find their way back to the rightful owner. Thank you!
