A Message to Our Families
Dear MES Families,
Welcome back! We hope that you had time to enjoy your December break and the holidays! It has been wonderful to have the students and staff back in the building. The New Year brings a time to reflect on our work, set goals for the future, and celebrate the growth and accomplishments that have already been shared during this school year. We value our partnership with you and look forward to the rest of the school year!
Please take note that the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) is hosting a virtual meeting on January 9th and we will be having an early release day on January 24th. For our early release day, students will be dismissed an hour and a half earlier than our usual dismissal time. There is more information below.
As always, please reach out if needed and we wish you a wonderful New Year!
Warm regards,
Ms. Mahedy and Mrs. Carlson
Scientist Spotlight!
We are planning a scientist spotlight event for January 10th for our students in Grades 2 and 3!
This year we are focusing on Eugenie Clark. Eugenie Clark (May 4, 1922 – February 25, 2015), popularly known as The Shark Lady, was an American ichthyologist known for both her research on shark behavior and her study of fish. She was a pioneer in the field of scuba diving for research purposes. In addition to being regarded as an authority in marine biology, Clark was popularly recognized and used her fame to promote marine conservation.
To culminate the spotlight we have arranged for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy to come and lead a shark tagging activity for our grade 2 and grade 3 students. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy works with students to bring standard based lessons into the classroom and strive to connect students to the ongoing white shark research and conservation efforts in a hands-on and engaging way. Check out more about the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy here: https://www.atlanticwhiteshark.org
We would like to thank Mr. Spano, our STEM Coach Grades K-5, and our staff for making this event possible!
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
Our next PTO meeting will be virtual! The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 9th, at 5 PM. "Zoom" in to join the discussion, learn about upcoming events, discover ways to contribute to our school, and more! We hope to see you there! Lost and Found
Our MES Lost and Found is exploding with valuable items that we would like to return to their rightful owners. We have many jackets, sweatshirts, vests, and other items that have been lost and need to be found! Please ask your child to visit it if they have misplaced something or visit us at the main lobby to claim a missing item. We are asking that you place your child’s name inside of their clothing or on their personal items. Thank you very much!
Hats and lunch boxes
Water bottles
Sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets!
Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS)
At MES, we are respectful, responsible, ready, caring, and safe! If your child is seen demonstrating this, they may be given a bead for their "Dolphin Way" necklace. During the months of January and February, they are also given a paper “snowball” to be added to our school-wide snowman. Our snowman has just begun! Let's have it EXPLODING with paper snowballs! We know that our students can do it!
How can you support your child at home? Talk to your child about how they can show that they are being responsible, respectful, ready, caring, and safe! Here are some examples:
- Be safe in the bathroom
- Be in charge of your words and actions
- Enter and exit recess quietly in line
- Use kind words and actions
- Keep your hands to yourself
- Keep your possessions in your backpack while you are on the bus
- Listen to others
- Help others
- Be in charge of your learning
- Be responsible for your words and actions
