A Message to Our Families:
Dear MES Families,
In order to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there will be no school on Monday, January 15th. We will return to school on Tuesday, January 16th. Please also take note that we will be having an early release day on January 24th. This means that students will be dismissed an hour and a half earlier than our usual dismissal time.
Our second and third grade students enjoyed the Scientist Spotlight this week with a visit from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC)! We are also looking forward to welcoming Bart Weisman and his jazz band for the "Jazz in Schools" presentations for our kindergarten through third grade visits on January 24th and January 31st!
When planning for outdoor recess, we carefully consider the weather. At times, there might be a little snow on the ground, especially with our Cape Cod winters. As was the case this past week, we still enjoyed outdoor recess even with a little snow outside. We want to remind everyone that at MES, we are respectful, responsible, ready, caring and safe. This means that students are responsible for their personal items such as their hats, gloves, and jackets and students are safe when they are playing in the snow. Playing with snow is allowed; however, snowball fights are not allowed at school. Students are welcome to bring in earmuffs, hats, gloves, and even snow pants if there is snow again in the future. We ask that students do not share these items. Please remember to mark your child's name on any personal belongings. Thank you!
We hope that you have a wonderful long weekend!
Warm regards,
Ms. Mahedy and Mrs. Carlson
Scientist Spotlight & Atlantic White Shark Conservancy Visit
This year's Scientist Spotlight for our second and third graders focused on Eugenie Clark. Eugenie Clark (May 4, 1922 – February 25, 2015) is popularly known as The Shark Lady. Classrooms were able to share the text, Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean's Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating and illustrated by Marta Alvarez Miguens and other shark read alouds, learn about the Cape Cod food web, explore shark facts, and poetry about sharks! Thank you to our instructional coaches, Brian Spano and Mary Cronin for offering these resources and more! To culminate the spotlight, the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) came and led a shark tagging activity, shared about the benefits of a "healthy ocean," and provided information about great white sharks in many ways! Check out these pictures highlighting the visit from AWSC!
In the World of Physical Education
In the MES Gymnasium students in grades K- 3 have just finished up their Native American/Indigenous People & Pilgrim Games Unit. Preschool classes are all working on different things, some are starting floor gymnastics while another is starting basketball skills. All students Kindergarten to Grade 3 are working on our Floor Gymnastics Unit. Within this unit, students start by learning how to walk like a bear, crab, seal, bunny and inchworm. Students are getting used to putting weight on their hands. After that, students move onto rolls: pencil/log roll, egg roll and for those who can do it correctly the forward roll/somersault. The next thing we work on is arm supports where we put all of our body weight on our hands. Preschool students focus on monkey jumps and mule kicks, kindergarten to grade 3 students work on mule kicks, handstands, cartwheels and roundoffs. Finally we put all three pieces together into our "gymnastic sentence" with one of each movements connected together to form a beginning, a middle and an end! Ask your child to show you their favorite travel!
Thank you,
Ms. Buron

PLEASE encourage them to check the lost and found. You may also stop by to check out the lost and found. We want these items to be returned to their owners.Thank you!
