DYI Dolphin Report
April 21, 2024
A Message from the Principals
We hope all families were able to enjoy April break. Whether you were home or away, everyone likes a change of pace and this vacation was no different. Our dolphins were quite busy in the days leading up to April vacation. During MCAS the students showed great effort and their attendance was awesome so there are not too many make-up sessions to complete after the break. We have a week off from MCAS and then we will complete Math for Grades 4 & 5 and Science for Grade 5.
Before the break the students got to enjoy a presentation from the DY High School Band and Winter Percussion. An action shot from the color guard is included here. This show is an annual tradition at the school and the students have memorable experiences from this show and previous shows. We thank the high school for literally wheeling their show to DYIMS.
Looking ahead to May, our 5th grade students will have a new responsibility as they are becoming more mature students. Before 5th grade students receive school email on their iPads, we will send home families an explanation of what this looks like for their child. Further, all students receive training on how to use their school email. As middle school students, communication with school teachers becomes a natural part of their educational experience. This will not happen for a couple of weeks, but please be on the look out for this notice if you are a fifth grade family.
Otherwise set two alarms for the morning. It’s always difficult to wake up early after many days off. Looking forward to seeing everyone Monday morning!
Sincerely,
Mr. Blake, Dr. Greeson, and Mrs. Cleary

From the Nurse

March Madness Book Tournament
And the winner of the March Book Tournament was the The Oldest Student by Rita Lorraine Hubbard and Oge Mora! Thank you to our Literacy Committee for finding so many wonderful books that students and staff could enjoy together! All of the books highlighted women who showed what perseverance is what is needed to achieve any goal!
April is Poetry Month
This month, we will have "Poem in Your Pocket" Day to celebrate Poetry Month on April 29th. When students return from Spring Break, they will be responsible for writing or finding a special poem that speaks to them. They should be ready to share with their classmates, in the hallway, or maybe during related arts class! Poem in Your Pocket Day is celebrated on April 29 every year to encourage people across the United States to express themselves through poetry. The special day began in 2002 when the Office of the Mayor in New York City, in collaboration with the city’s Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education, announced their intent to deem this day Poem in Your Pocket Day. Individuals are encouraged to write their own poetry, perform their own work, or create their own art inspired by poetry. The aim, of course, is to remind people of their participation in the living art of poetry

March/April SEL Focus Area
From March 27 through April 26, our SEL focus is Perseverance: Continued effort to do or achieve something, despite difficulties, failure or opposition. At school students may practice tough math facts or comprehending a difficult text. In some instances, perseverance is learning to be a student in a new country! Perseverance is all about doing things that do not come easy right away. This includes riding a bike, practicing sports skills, or learning a new language!
Dolphin Dollars
We had our second Dolphin Dollar award on Thursday, March 28th! Students enjoyed watching Elemental! We look forward to our next round of Dolphin Dollars!
We continue to look for students following the Dolphin Way:

🐬 Be Responsible
🐬 Be Kind
Families can help by encouraging their students to follow the Dolphin Way!
