"In the long run, a people is known, not by its statements or its statistics, but by the stories it tells."
The contents and objectives of English courses at Dennis-Yarmouth High School conform to the guidelines set forth in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for English Language Arts and Literacy. All courses focus on fortifying skills in four domains: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Courses with multiple sections share common assessments and final examinations, and the department teaches the research paper in both the junior and senior years. Year-long general courses of study are offered in Honors and level 2 courses; Advanced Placement courses are offered during the junior and senior years. A diverse collection of English elective courses complements the general course of studies at all four grade levels, and the department orchestrates a yearly, school-wide poetry performance competition. Success in English classes necessitates daily preparation, regular attendance, timely submission of thoroughly completed assignments, and active in-class participation. Through exposure to a broad range of literary voices and abundant opportunities to hone their skills in language acquisition, critical thinking, composition, presentation, literary analysis, drama, and media, the department fosters in students a twentieth-first century perspective of life-long learning and engaged citizenship.
